If you’re a heavy MacBook user, chances are your screen is quickly covered in fingerprints, grease, and other debris. Luckily, this problem is pretty easy to fix to keep your MacBook screen looking as good as it did the day you unboxed it. Below you will find detailed information on how to clean your MacBook screen, as well as some additional keyboard cleaning tips.

How to clean your MacBook screen

Apple has a support document that explains some of the things to keep in mind when cleaning your MacBook display. Specifically, the company recommends avoiding the use of screen cleaners containing acetone, as this can damage the display and its coating.

Apple also warns against using window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosols, solvents, ammonia, abrasives, or cleaners that contain hydrogen peroxide.

With all the warnings from Apple, what’s the best way to clean your MacBook screen? Whenever I get asked this question, my number one recommendation is to check out WHOOSH products. WHOOSH offers several different options, but my favorite is the Screen Cleaner Kit.

This kit includes a 3.4 oz bottle of Screen Shine Cleaning Solution, as well as three microfiber cloths. It also includes a 0.3 oz bottle of Screen Shine which is perfect for travel and fits easily into a backpack or laptop bag.

The WHOOSH Screen Shine Solution consists of mild detergents, distilled water and a shine agent. It is free from all solutions that Apple forbids to use. In fact, this is why Apple Stores around the world have been using WHOOSH to clean displays for years. In addition to the screen cleaning kit, WHOOSH also sells a large bottle of screen polish solution; you just need to prove your own microfiber fabric.

If you have a WHOOSH screen cleaning kit, it’s pretty easy to clean your MacBook screen and make it brand new.

First, you need to turn off your MacBook completely and unplug it from any accessories or chargers. It’s much easier to clean the display and find fingerprints and debris when the MacBook is turned off and the display is back on. Make sure there is no large debris on the display.

Then simply spray a small amount of Screen Shine solution onto one side of a microfiber cloth. You can use the cloth provided by WHOOSH or any other microfiber cloth. Once a small amount of solution remains on the cloth, gently wipe the display from left to right, starting from the bottom and working your way up to the webcam.

You should notice fairly quickly that the solution and cloth remove smudges and fingerprints from the display. Then flip the microfiber cloth over, use the dry side, and repeat the process to remove all liquid and polish the screen.

It’s important to remember one key thing: never spray Screen Shine solution directly onto your MacBook’s screen. If you do this, the solution may get inside your Mac and damage it.

How to clean your MacBook keyboard

How about cleaning your MacBook keyboard? Like your MacBook’s display, your keyboard can quickly become greasy and collect dust and other debris. In fact, if things get too bad, the trash can even cause stuck keys and other problems.

To clean your MacBook keyboard, I recommend spraying a very, very small amount of WHOOSH solution on a microfiber cloth and wiping down the keys. Then use the dry side to remove any liquid stains and add some shine.

However, you’ll need a way to lock your keyboard so that your MacBook doesn’t respond to keys when you hit them for cleaning. Luckily, there is a free KeyboardCleanTool app that locks the keyboard for exactly this reason.

Conclusion

Once you’ve done the first cleaning step to keep your MacBook looking like new, I recommend doing it regularly thereafter. The more often you clean your MacBook screen and keyboard, the easier it will be every time. The MacBook is a fingerprint magnet, no matter how secure you are.
