New retro FPS are always being added to Steam. The latest addition to the ’90s shooter is a forgotten title called Chasm: The Rift, due for release in October 2022.

Retro shooters have had something of a renaissance in recent years. Not only were there new titles like Dusk, Amid Evil and Ion Fury, which took the old classics as inspiration – old classics like Powerslave Exhumed and Quake also got a second spring through Nightdive Studios. They’re also better than ever to play on modern PCs.

Actually, there shouldn’t be any more 90s shooters to revive soon, but another first-person shooter that time has forgotten keeps popping up on Steam completely unannounced. This time it’s about Chasm: The Rift – an unknown FPS from 1997. Chasm’s Steam page describes it as a “groundbreaking classic first-person 3D shooter” – but that’s where the nostalgic rose-tinted glasses crept on. While the gameplay may seem old school, the graphics and presentation still feel uninspired and dreary, drab – especially compared to Quake.

At least the screenshots from Chasm on Steam can still inspire a little thanks to the high resolution. And the character designs are bizarre and quite independent. What was special about Chasm back then was the gameplay feature of being able to shoot off the limbs of the monsters. Chasm: The Rift is slated for release in October 2022. Behind it is the relatively unknown publisher SNEG Ltd., who recently published some retro games on Steam. Among them were the Gold Box D&D Roleplaying Games and Blade of Darkness.
