In recent months, the poor general form of the French giant Ubisoft has sometimes been mentioned, but it is Yves Guillemot, the group’s CEO, who is now back in the spotlight after taking a radical decision testifying to the health wobbly from Ubisoft.
The CEO will lower his annual remuneration by a third
This was reported to us by the Axios journalists following the release of the company’s 352-page annual report. Yves Guillemot will effectively give up €310,607 over the coming year, ie a third of his usual pay which will be “reduced” to €624,824. A representative from Ubisoft said, among other things:
“This is a personal decision by Yves Guillemot, which he took considering that the company had not achieved the financial objectives that it had publicly communicated to the markets. »
More specifically, Yves Guillemot is waiving his compensation linked to the financial performance of his company and to the resolution of the problems of sexual misconduct and toxic culture within Ubisoft. Over the past year, Ubisoft has not met the objectives initially set. We see a 14% drop in operating profit, a 5% drop in sales and Ubisoft’s stock has lost half its value.
This pay cut demanded by Yves Guillemot is a well-known sign in the business world and other leaders in the sector have already done the same to indicate that their position was in bad shape. In 2011, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata’s salary was cut by 50% following the failed launch of the Nintendo 3DS. A decline repeated in 2014 following complicated sales of Nintendo products.
More recently Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, gave up his bonuses and lowered his salary following cases of harassment and sexual misconduct within the group.
Anyway, Ubisoft has not yet come out of this bad patch and the relative success of their latest productions, apart from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, is not going to help matters. It remains to be seen what Ubisoft can do in this difficult situation to raise the bar, while takeover rumors were still circulating two months ago.
