iOS 16 improves backup on iCloud servers, in particular by allowing it to be performed on 4G networks. Previously, it could only be done over Wi-Fi or 5G on compatible devices, but this addition will allow you to save more often, even when you are away for several days from any Wi-Fi network.

The other new feature is the iCloud backup settings, as displayed in the Settings app. Apple has completely revamped them, with an intermediate view that allows you to manage the iCloud backup of the current iOS device and all those associated with your Apple account. This allows you to quickly deactivate a backup and delete it on the fly, which can be useful if your online storage space starts to get full.

If you choose the device in use from the bottom list, a new screen is displayed and it is rich in information. Under iOS 15, you could only see the date of the last backup; in iOS 16, we also have its size and even the estimated evolution of the size for the next backup. Even more useful, there is a list of all the apps that are backed up on iCloud, sorted by the weight of their data and with for each a box which allows you to control whether these backups should be kept or deleted.

In my case, I was able to disable the backup of the FiLMiC Pro app, which quickly contains several gigas of videos and which I don’t particularly want to keep in iCloud. By unchecking its box, future backups were immediately disabled and the data already stored on Apple’s servers will be deleted immediately, which will also allow you to recover a little bit of online storage.

In addition to the most demanding apps, this new option can also be used to disable the backup of those that manage sensitive data and that you do not want to find on iCloud servers. Remember in this regard that iCloud backups are not not end-to-end encrypted.
