July 24, 2006: on this day, the world first saw Apple’s new wireless Mighty Mouse, which was a multi-button Bluetooth device with ultra-precise laser tracking.

The wireless Mighty Mouse was introduced a year after the wired version and featured significant design changes. Prior to this, every Apple mouse shipped with a Mac had only one button. The Mighty Mouse comes with two buttons, a miniature trackball for scrolling, and side grip sensors to greatly enhance its functionality.

Given Steve Jobs’ dislike for visible buttons, the designers kept the look similar to the company’s previous mouse, which was released without a button.

Users really liked Mighty Mouse. It received only minor criticism for not being able to press the right and left buttons at the same time (which is common with current Apple mice), and that the scroll ball would occasionally become clogged with dirt and require cleaning.

The Mighty Mouse wireless mouse was powered by two AA batteries, and the new laser tracking that replaced the optical one made it 20 times more accurate. The Mighty Mouse was priced at $66, plus the price of the batteries. It wasn’t until October 2009 that the Apple Magic Mouse managed to push it back.
