For Xbox players, there is a big reason to be happy: Microsoft console owners can now use Discord, while PlayStation players still have to wait longingly for the function. But to get Discord working on Xbox, there is one important requirement. We explain to you what you have to do to be able to use the fresh feature.
Discord on the Xbox: For now only for insiders
In May 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment proudly announced that Discord would make its way to PlayStation after securing a minority stake in the company. However, not much has happened so far. Discord users can only link their PSN account so their Discord friends can see what PlayStation games they’re playing – that’s pretty meager.
The Xbox, on the other hand, is very different. As Discord announced in an official blog post, Xbox players can now use Discord on their console. But there is a limitation: So far, the new feature is only available to members of the Xbox Insider Program who can install and test new updates and software before anyone else at regular intervals (source: discord).
But the Xbox Insider Program isn’t an elite club that only select Xbox players get out to – anyone can download the appropriate app from the Xbox Store, install it, and then sign up for the program. However, it is possible that you will have to wait a bit afterwards until you receive an update that unlocks the function.
But if you don’t want to register for this program, you don’t need to worry. According to Discord, the function soon to be rolled out to all other Xbox players as well. However, no exact date was given.
Discord announced the new feature with a cute little trailer, which you can check out here:
I’m an Xbox Insider! How do I use Discord on my Xbox?
If you’re already a member of the Xbox Insider Program, here’s how:
- Connect your Xbox account to Discord (found under “User Settings” -> Shortcuts). Additional note: If you have already linked your Xbox account to Discord, you will need to unlink and relink it again.
- Now make sure you have the Xbox mobile app on your smartphone installed and linked your Xbox to the mobile app.
- Now you can either via smartphone or desktop join a voice channel.
- You should now see a new option that allows you to transfer your call to the Xbox. Click on them.
- Well will himself automatically open the Xbox app on your smartphone and ask you to share the Discord on your Xbox. Click on the green button.
- Now you can easily connect the headset of your choice to your Xbox and chat with your friends directly from the console.
You can already see that using Discord on the Xbox is still included some extra effort connected, but it’s nice to see that Microsoft and Discord are taking the first step here and getting the ball rolling. It remains to be seen when Sony will follow suit and provide such a function for the PlayStation 4 and PS5.
