Netflix has now started directing iPhone and iPad users to an external website where they can sign up for the service. Earlier this year, Apple began allowing “reader” apps that provide access to digital content, such as Netflix and Spotify, to link to account sign-up pages on its own websites, something not previously allowed for apps in the App Store.

It has not been possible to sign up for Netflix in the iOS app as far back as 2018, instead users had to navigate to the Netflix website in a web browser to sign up before accessing the content in the app. This was the case because it allowed Netflix to avoid Apple’s 30 percent commission, while still following the rules.

This information is given to users who leave the app:
“Any accounts or purchases made outside of this app will be managed by the developer “Netflix.” Your App Store account, stored payment methods, and related features, such as subscription management and refund requests, will not be available. Apple is not responsible for the privacy or security of transactions made with this developer.”

Now Apple allows certain apps to link to its sites

About time

Now Apple is finally starting to let some “reading apps”, such as Netflix, Kindle or Spotify, link to their own sites for things like account management or creating an account. This is a big improvement over the past for apps like Netflix, where users who didn’t already have an account only saw a number they could call for help. Now Netflix can forward users to its site, where they can create an account. But developers can’t just add a link, first Apple has to approve the app. Two of the requirements are that apps must inform that purchases are not run through Apple and that there must be a link to one of Apple’s sites that describes the risks of providing information to a third party.
