Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series will be a record-breaking series

The first season alone is said to have cost almost SEK 4.8 billion

It looks like Amazon’s upcoming TV series adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books will be the most expensive TV series ever made. It has already been known that Amazon will invest heavily in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Now the Hollywood Reporter states that the cost of just the first season of the series landed at 650 million New Zealand dollars. This corresponds to 465 million US dollars or almost 4.8 billion Swedish kronor. Stuart Nash, New Zealand’s minister for tourism and economic development, says in a comment to New Zealand’s Morning Report: “What I can tell you is Amazon is going to spend about $650 million in season one alone. This is fantastic, it really is … this will be the largest television series ever made.” To put the figure of 465 million dollars in relation to other television series, it can be mentioned that a season of Game of Thrones should have cost around 100 million dollars, while each episode of The Mandalorian cost around 15 million dollars and the episodes of Westworld cost 9 million dollars each. However, it must be taken into account that part of the sum that Amazon now reports as costs probably includes the rights it bought to make a television series of Tolkien’s books. Part of the cost probably also consists of props and other things that can be reused in future seasons of the series, which means that these may not have to be quite as expensive as the first season. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which here in Sweden will be called Sagan om Ringen: Maktens ringar, premieres on Amazon Prime Video on September 2. You will find a short trailer for the series below.

Here is the first trailer for The Rings of Power

Amazon’s lavish Lord of the Rings series

Here comes the first full-length trailer for Amazon’s blockbuster The Rings of Power, a TV series that looks set to be the most expensive ever produced. The trailer is over two minutes long and Amazon seems to have tried to squeeze in as much as possible from the series. We get a look at several of the characters that will appear in The Rings of Power, which makes it a little difficult to form a picture of what will actually happen in the series. The Rings of Power takes place thousands of years before the events of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books, and Amazon writes about the series: “Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.” September 2 The Rings of Power premieres on Amazon Prime Video.
