As technology advances, there are more and more different ways to make a better display. First, its resolution grew, then the diagonal began to increase, and in parallel with this, OLED technologies developed so much that they could become mass, but, fortunately, have not yet found wide application in tablets. But there was one change that few people noticed, because not everyone understood what it was – a display without an air gap. And not everyone understood the benefits if they did not compare the displays with each other. I first noticed this when I took the iPad Air in one hand and the iPad Air 2 in the other. Since then, everything has fallen into place. Naturally, it is better without a layer, but such displays also have a very serious minus.
What is Airless Display
You may have guessed that the main advantage of airless display technology is that the picture on it is much better. In the iPad example I cited above, one of them seemed to have a rather hazy film on the screen, while the other did not.
Indeed, when there is no air gap (such a display is also called laminated), even with the same matrix, the picture becomes more saturated and it seems that it is not just broadcast from somewhere below, but simply drawn on the glass itself. This is especially noticeable when viewed at an angle or in clear weather. By the way, do you know the difference between AMOLED and SUPER AMOLED displays from Samsung? The same layer. In the second case, it is not, and this was already enough to give this type of display a separate name.
Which screen is stronger and less scratched
Glass, which is made in a single module with a matrix, among other things, is also more resistant to scratches, because it should be more durable in itself. It also beats less often due to the fact that the structure is more rigid and bends less during falls.

The main disadvantage of modern screens
But the problem is that if there was a fall, but the glass still broke, then here, more than ever, it would be more accurate to describe the situation with the words “the screen broke”. It is very difficult to repair such a module separately. The glass is tightly glued to the matrix, and it takes a lot of effort to separate it. And without separating it, replacing the screen will cost several tens of thousands of rubles.
The problem has become especially acute with the release of the latest generations of iPad Pro (after 2018) and iPad Air 4th generation and newer. They are made without an air gap, which greatly complicates their repair.
Our Friends at Apple Pro Service Center, who help us with the repair and customization of equipment, as well as throw up materials for articles with recommendations, spoke about such displays in more detail. They are able to “stick” displays to replace only the glass, even in displays without an air gap. Check out replacement prices you can on their websitea by the promo code “AIRLESS” our readers are provided discount of 2500 rubles from the price indicated on the site for your specific model from iPad Air 2.

How to change the glass on the iPad
First of all, a rather long and painstaking work is carried out to remove the fragments and remove the display from the iPad case. For this, both “ordinary” tweezers and rather specific tools that are made specifically for dismantling screens are used.
When the display is removed, attachments are removed from it, in particular sensors or a button (for iPad Air 2, iPad Pro 9.7, 10.5 “). This is necessary for the work, and after their completion, the elements are returned to their place.
The old adhesive layer, due to which the screen was kept in place, is also removed. Before installation, a new one is used, which will hold the screen as securely as the factory one.
After that, special, rather rare equipment comes into play, which is used to fix and paste the screen modules. After processing, the damaged glass is cut off from the matrix, the work of which is checked to determine the feasibility of further work.
Further work is carried out in a special dust-free chamber, where excess pressure is created to prevent dust from entering between the matrix and the glass. Once the new glass is in place, the module is placed in a high-tech “furnace” that glues the pieces together so they hold and work like they did from the factory.
The process of regular iPad screen replacement
After this procedure, it remains only to install the screen in place and check its operation. When everything is done, the satisfied customer gets their tablet back and saves a very decent amount of money. A similar procedure, by the way, applies to the iPhone of all models.
