Do you have a newer LG TV model from 2018 or newer? If so, you’ll probably be happy to know that you can get started with Apple HomeKit even if you haven’t purchased any HomeKit accessories. That’s right, you can control most of your TV with HomeKit on your iPhone or iPad.
Smart TVs have gained some very exciting features over the past few years, and thanks to their popularity, TV makers are partnering with Apple to bring features like AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to certain models. To use all of HomeKit’s features, you usually need a home hub like a HomePod, Apple TV, or even just an iPad, but once you’ve got that set up, you can use Siri to turn your TV on/off and even automate it. his work with the application Home.
If you have a relatively new LG TV (since 2018) or many other smart TVs, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s pretty easy to set up.
How to set up HomeKit on an LG TV
Before proceeding with the next procedure, make sure your TV and the Apple device you are using to set up HomeKit are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Next, you need to check if your TV has the latest firmware as AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support was added via a software update on older models. When you’re done, just follow these steps:
- First, turn on your LG TV and press the Home button on the remote control. This will bring up the webOS menu which is displayed at the bottom with a range of applications and input sources. Here; you will find the AirPlay function. Select it.
- This will bring up the AirPlay menu. Here, select the “AirPlay and HomeKit Settings” option to continue.
- This step will display the HomeKit and AirPlay settings. Select the “Home” option located in the HomeKit section as shown in the screenshot below.
- Your LG TV will now display a HomeKit QR code so you can add it as a HomeKit accessory.
- To scan this code, you need to open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad. Click on the “+” icon located in the upper left corner of the screen to access additional options.
- Then select “Add Accessory” from the context menu to proceed to the next step.
- A QR code scanner will appear in the Home app. Just point the camera at the code displayed on the TV screen.
- The Home app should successfully detect your TV in a couple of seconds. Now just click “Add to Home” and you’re done.
It was basically the initial setup. Your LG TV will now be listed under Favorite Accessories in the Home app.
If the QR code scanner in the Home app cannot scan the code displayed on your TV, you still have other options to complete the pairing process. You can manually enter the 8-digit setup code that is written next to the actual QR code by selecting the “I don’t have a code or I can’t scan” option in the Home app. Keep in mind that both devices must be connected to the same network in order to complete the pairing process.
Once set up, you’ll be able to turn your LG TV on and off from the Home app, and if you have a Home hub, you’ll be able to force Siri to turn it on by saying “Hey Siri, turn it on.” television.” You’ll be able to switch between different input sources or even access your TV’s settings by simply pressing and holding a button on your TV in the Home app.
