At WWDC 2022, Apple announced a new operating system for the Mac called macOS Ventura. With macOS Monterey, Apple focused on improving system apps, and with macOS Ventura, it shifted its focus to the Mail app, improvements to Spotlight and multitasking with Stage Manager, and Continuity Camera to use iPhone as a webcam. 1. Stage manager

Unlike Stage Manager on iPadOS, Apple doesn’t limit this feature to just Macs with an Apple Silicon chip. The Stage Manager feature is also available on Intel-based MacBook models. Activate Stage Manager from the Mac Control Center and the system will enable a second dock menu on the left side to manage apps (up to five groups of apps). In the optional dock menu, you can group apps and view updates like messages and emails. Ultimately, you can create your ideal workspace with different groups of applications for specific tasks.

For example, you can leave Photoshop and Lightroom open in one application group to call them when editing images, and continue writing in Pages or Notes in another application group.

2. Preview Files in Spotlight

Spotlight in macOS Ventura has been significantly upgraded, you can directly view files from Spotlight search results. Just hit the spacebar in the search result to quickly view the file in preview mode.

3. Take quick actions from Spotlight

With macOS Ventura, Apple is finally closing the gap between Spotlight and third-party solutions like Alfred. You can perform quick actions like starting a timer and turning on focus mode right from Spotlight. You can also run shortcuts and search for song titles with Shazam without leaving the current interface.

4. Search images in Spotlight

You can now search for images in Photos, Messages, Notes, and Finder via Spotlight search. Spotlight will also display results from the web. Press Command + Space and start typing the location of the photo, a scene from life, text, or the name of an animal.

5. Get detailed information about TV shows, movies and famous people

This is another Spotlight feature that Apple has borrowed from iOS 15. You can simply type in a movie, series, or actor’s name in Spotlight and view detailed results with all relevant information.

6. Sharing Safari Tab Groups

macOS Monterey has received support for tab groups in Safari. You can group related tabs into one group. Now with macOS Ventura, it’s possible to share these groups with others via iMessage or any other instant messaging app. This is useful when you want to share a list of hotels or study sites.

7. New design of start pages for tab groups

In Safari, you can change the background of the start pages, now you can set your own background for each group of tabs.

8. Sending email on a schedule in the Mail app

Apple hasn’t updated the user interface of the stock Mail app on Mac in a long time. Therefore, users prefer third-party email clients on Mac such as Outlook and Spark. With macOS Ventura, Apple decided to take on its own email client.

With the release of macOS Ventura, the Mail app will get three new features. You will now be able to set up delayed emails. If you think the recipient is busy or lives in a different time zone, you can use Scheduled Send by specifying the desired email delivery time.

9. Get Reminders for Important Emails in the Mail App

If you have a habit of forgetting to reply to important emails, Remind Me Later ensures that you don’t forget to reply to any of them. For example, when you receive an important email in the Mail app, you can use the reminder feature and ask the app to send you a notification at a specific time so you don’t forget about the email.

10. Smart search in mail

The Mail app has received an enhanced search feature that better understands your intent and offers improved search results.

11. Redesigned system settings menu

System Preferences on Mac looked pretty dated. Apple has renamed them and redesigned them to meet modern standards. The new System Preferences menu on Mac now looks the same as it does on iPhone and iPad. It includes simple navigation, better organization, and powerful search to find the settings you need faster.

12. Passkeys

Apple has worked with Microsoft, Google and the FIDO alliance to develop Passkeys, which replace passwords forever. Now you can use Touch ID to authenticate. Apple creates a digital key that cannot be forged. The feature works for both apps and websites.

13. Cancellation of sent messages

You no longer have to apologize for typos in messages sent through the default Messages app. macOS Ventura allows you to unsend any message within 15 minutes of sending it. You can also edit the post at the same time if you don’t want to create a post from scratch.

14. Mark messages as unread

Now you can mark messages as unread and open them later. You don’t have to read every message carefully immediately.

15. Better Collaboration in Messages

macOS Ventura makes it easy to collaborate on shared projects across Files, Pages, Numbers, Notes, and Safari through the Messages app. When you share a collaboration invitation in messages, all team members are automatically added to the project. SharePlay, which was only available in FaceTime for sharing movies and TV shows, is now available in Messages.

You will receive notifications in messages when someone makes changes to a document or spreadsheet.

16. Handoff in FaceTime

Just like regular calls, you can switch a FaceTime call from one device to another with a single click. For example, start a FaceTime conversation on your MacBook and then continue the conversation on your iPhone without interrupting the conversation.

17. Continuity Camera

If you’re not happy with the quality of your Mac’s webcam, with macOS Ventura you can mount your iPhone on top of your MacBook display (using a dedicated accessory) and use your iPhone’s main camera as a webcam. You can even switch to the ultra-wide angle lens to showcase your actual desktop during a call. The whole system works wirelessly. All you have to do is purchase a custom mount from a third party or Apple to mount your iPhone on top.

The Continuity Camera feature also supports Center Stage (you always stay in the center of the image, as if the camera is following you), Studio Light (provides amazing effects) and portrait mode to blur the background.

18. Game improvements

Apple is refining the macOS Metal engine to improve gaming performance on the Mac. MetalFX will help developers render smaller frames into larger, higher quality frames. The new fast resource loading API will provide a better direct path from storage to a unified memory system.

Apple also announced upcoming games such as EA’s GRID Legends, Capcom’s Resident Evil: Village, and Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky.

19. Freeform for new ideas

The Freeform app in macOS Ventura is Apple’s direct answer to Whiteboard in Windows 11 and other third-party software solutions like FigJam. With Freeform’s drawing tools, you can brainstorm on a white sheet of paper while discussing new ideas with colleagues via FaceTime or messages.

20. Lock hidden and recently deleted photos

You can now block access to hidden and deleted photos with your Mac login password or Touch ID.

21. Application Watch»

Apple has released a new Clock app on Mac that was previously available on iPhone and iPad. In the Clock app, you can view world time, timers, and alarms.

22. Brand new app House»

The updated Home app has received a new user interface, it is now easier to navigate, organize, view and manage all smart home accessories. The application also has a new camera view – to display images from nine cameras.

23. Lock Notes with Login Password

In the Notes app, you no longer need to remember a separate password for locked notes. Now you can use the same password for them that you use to log in to your Mac.

24. Templates in reminders

You can now create templates in the Reminders app so you can reuse them in the future. You can also pin a specific to-do list for easy access.

25. Live text in video

The Live Text in Videos feature should be more useful on a Mac than on an iPhone or iPad. When watching lectures or other instructional videos on a Mac, you can pause the video and copy the text from the frame.

macOS Ventura will be released later this year. Please note that some macOS Ventura features will not work on Intel-based Macs. These features include Live Captions, Reference Mode in Sidecar, and emoji support in dictation mode.
