After the leaks and the first gameplay trailer, The Last of Us remake falls short of expectations. The survival adventure may look better than ever, but the gameplay doesn’t seem to have changed. Naughty Dog’s senior environment texture artist is now defending the remake, but fans are countering.

updated:

Jonathan Benainous, artist at Naughty Dog, wrote on Twitter that he was disappointed by the many negative reactions. People would criticize the gameplay without having played The Last of Us Part 1 themselves. Benainous says the PS3 version and the soon-to-be PS5 remake would become one completely different in terms of gameplay.

Reason for the heated discussion: It was previously said that players expected modernized gameplay in The Last of Us Part 1. Fans expected gameplay mechanics from The Last of Us 2. But Benainous writes, that the crawl function would shoot up the remake’s gameplay.

However, fans are firing back because it doesn’t matter that certain mechanics weren’t originally intended. “It should a remake be, one would have redesign the levels to enable these features.”

In particular, the steep price of 70 US dollars (80 euros in this country) is simply too high for many.

Under another tweet, Benainous writes that as a game developer he has no influence on the price of the final product. All he can do is assure everyone that everything from the original game has been recreated from the ground up. Too bad Naughty Dog didn’t take the chance to bring the gameplay up to The Last of Us 2 level.

Benainous has not commented on the evasion mechanics. Funnily enough, there was a gameplay video of The Last of Us at E3 2012, in which Joel could dodge melee attacks.

The official gameplay video for the remake has now 114,000 likes and 82,000 dislikes. (Source: YouTube – Playstation)

Original message from July 22, 2022:

The Last of Us Part 1: No real gameplay improvements

Naughty Dog has a leak – again. And it affects The Last of Us again. As a reminder, before the second part appeared, the entire story was shared on the Internet. This time it affects The Last of Us Part 1. At first there was only a trailer to see, but without gameplay material. Suddenly circulate new pictures, gameplay videos and screenshots of the controller settings on the net – and these dampen the anticipation enormously.

You can check out the leaked footage, including first gameplay videos by industry insider Nick Baker, in a post on Resetera. (Source: resetera)

On Twitter he explains that the gameplay shown is apparently to the current version acts. However, he cannot confirm whether the final version is meant.

But that’s very likely, because on the one hand Naughty Dog recently announced that the game has reached gold status; on the other hand there is now also an official trailer to see.

The Last of Us Part 1 | First gameplay trailer

But as you can see, you see nothing! Apparently, the survival game still plays identically, the crawling and dodging mechanics from The Last of Us 2 don’t seem to exist, and no real gameplay improvements are noticeable.

According to Naughty Dog, the remake has one more sophisticated AI missed and the Accessibility relevant features increased. Even if The Last of Us Part 1 makes a big leap graphically, justifies the price of 80 euros?

Fans are disappointed with the remake

Many players think: No it does not! The frustration becomes clear under the corresponding YouTube video, which has 63,000 likes and 39,000 dislikes at the time of this news. (Source: YouTube – Playstation)

The video is titled “Renewed for PS5”. The user Its Carnivorous accordingly makes fun of:

“It looks awesome, they even renewed the price.”

Heinrich Von Oetker also writes:

“It shouldn’t cost as much as The Last of Us 3 would cost.”

However, other users have complained about Naughty Dog’s misleading marketing. user calvon means:

“This looks amazing, but when you advertise that the remake has the same level of gameplay as part 2, people expect crawling, jumping or dodging/parrying instead of haptic feedback.”

fans have with the gameplay mechanics established in The Last of Us 2 expected. They are all the more disappointed now that these are obviously missing.

The leaks didn’t do the remake any good. The official gameplay video is also mocked on Twitter.

And heated arguments erupt between fans who are now defending the game and those who are bitterly disappointed.

Colleague Gregor was not convinced of the remake even after the announcement:

The Last of Us Part 1 is expected to be released on September 2, 2022.
