One of Apple’s semiconductor experts, Kim Woo-Pyung, is going to work for a major competitor, Samsung Electronics. Woo-Pyong is the director of the company’s newly established Packaging Solutions Center at Device Solution America (DSA), according to Business Korea.

Woo-Pyong has experience with Texas Instruments and Qualcomm, an Apple supplier. This hiring from Samsung comes after he spent nearly nine years at Apple.

Experts believe that such recruitment is rare due to the special nature of the relationship between the two tech giants. However, this isn’t the first time an Apple veteran has left for Samsung. In 2012, Luke Julia, who oversaw the development of Siri, left Apple for Samsung.

Business Korea also said that Samsung is currently focused on developing technologies for packaging. As ultra-microfabrication processes become more difficult to develop, chip makers want to improve packaging technology to overcome these hurdles. As a former semiconductor expert at Apple, Woo-Pyong will lead the effort.
