Have you ever wondered what the most iconic Apple stores like the very first location, Apple Fifth Avenue and Infinite Loop looked like during their grand opening? Or maybe you’ve been there and want to get back into magic? Apple Retail Fan Michael Steiber created his most impressive project, the Apple Store Time Machine. It’s an incredibly immersive Mac app that lets you explore the most iconic Apple Stores in great detail, just as they were when they were inaugurated.
My former colleague Michael Stieber is the master of Apple Retail, history and design. Past projects have included mapping Apple’s vast universe of cosmic grays, exploring new Apple Stores like Los Angeles’ Tower Theater, Apple Carnegie Library, tracking which of the 500+ stores were open during the pandemic, and more.
Now, with his most incredible project to date – based on work he started last year – he has created an amazing experience that takes you back in time to four of Apple’s most important retail stores – exactly as they were when they opened, with amazing historical accuracy. .
Here is how Michael describes Time Machine in the Apple Store:
“Time Machine at the Apple Store is a celebration of the places and products that have shaped our lives for over twenty years. This interactive experience recreates memorable moments from Apple’s history with great detail and historical accuracy.”
Hands-On Experience with Time Machine at the Apple Store – Tysons Corner
I’ve been able to test Apple Store Time Machine over the past few days and have been smiling from ear to ear throughout the experience. On the initial loading screen with flying toasters, sound effects, and the Mac OS Aqua main menu, you’ve entered a teleporter.
The four stores you can visit include Tysons Corner, the world’s first Apple Store, Standford Mall, the era of mini-stores, Fifth Avenue, a decade-defining design, and Infinite Loop, a reimagined Apple Store.
As you enter each store, there is a brief explanation of the history and meaning of each place. You can use the ASDW or arrow keys to navigate, as well as a mouse or trackpad. I’ll talk specifically about Tysons Corner below, but all four stores are amazing!
As I said above, the level of detail Michael has put into this is incredible. Everything from the price tags and specs of the original products that were available on opening day to Steve Jobs giving presentations (with video and audio!) of the bright red phone are all here.
Michael’s incredible background in Apple retail history and design, combined with the sharpest eye for detail I’ve ever seen, created the closest thing to a real time machine you could experience in these Apple stores.
Download Apple Store Time Machine
If you have any interest in Apple or just have fond memories of buying your first iPod, iPhone, or Mac, Apple Store Time Machine will be a huge pleasure for you. I can’t recommend trying it highly enough!
Apple Store Time Machine is now available as a free download (for Mac) with a donation option to support the amazing work and hundreds of hours of time spent researching, designing, and building the app. Look for the “Download and Donate” button at the bottom of the site.
