An over-the-air update (OTA) has brought Apple CarPlay to new Volvo vehicles based on Android-Automotive. CarPlay has been missing from Volvo models since the automaker switched to Google’s operating system.
According to EV, Volvo has been releasing OTA updates for over a year now, hoping to “make ownership easier and more flexible.” The last update was in April and all new Volvo models are eligible for these OTA software updates.
The company statement also says:
With over-the-air updates, we can be confident that our customers will be able to experience new features quickly and easily,” said Sanela Ibrovich, Head of Connected Experience at Volvo. “It also means that a new Volvo car is no longer the best when it leaves the factory, but continues to improve as we roll out additional upgrades.
Wireless CarPlay hasn’t arrived on Volvo yet
With this update, iPhone users can mirror their iOS device to the Android system while in the car. Auto Express says wireless CarPlay is not yet available and users must rely on a wired USB connection for now.
This update is now available to drivers in 14 new markets and is expected to cover more than 200,000 vehicles. Drivers currently using the Android Automotive operating system can activate CarPlay at any time.
