William Rankin is a particularly well-known aviator. Indeed, in the middle of a storm, he survived a fall of… 45 minutes. Explanations.

William Rankin was a pilot in the US Marine Corps and served in World War II and the Korean War. In 1959, during a flight from Massachusetts to South Carolina, USA, he found himself in the middle of a violent thunderstorm. To avoid it, he began to fly his plane upwards. However, at 14 kilometers in height, his plane did not hold up. To survive, he had only one solution: to eject his seat.

However, the conditions were atrocious for the pilot: it was -50°C and the decompression of the air was so overwhelming that his ears, nose, mouth and even his eyes began to bleed. And, carried by the strong currents of the stormy cloud and in full hail, its fall lasted approximately 45 minutes.

William Rankin is a miracle: he landed in a forest in South Carolina, survived and was not seriously injured. This event therefore makes him the only known person in the history of aviation to have survived a fall from the top of a storm cloud.
