Opensignal has released their latest report and it’s interesting. All major carriers advertise their fastest version of 5G under different marketing names. For T-Mobile it’s UC (Ultra Capacity), Verizon uses UWB (Ultra Wideband), and AT&T calls it 5G+. Now, Opensignal has calculated how often these enhanced 5G connections are available, how fast they are, and more.
Following on from its extensive report on US mobile carriers, earlier this month, Opensignal released “Quantitative Evaluation of New Enhanced 5G Services in the US” on its website as the industry’s first report.
“Opensignal analyzed the mobile user experience in the US when connected to premium 5G services from three US carriers: AT&T’s 5G+, T-Mobile’s Ultra Capacity 5G (5G UC), and Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband (5G UW). For this analysis, we will refer to all of these offerings as Enhanced 5G for convenience. These services offer a markedly better experience than 5G due to lower frequency bands that are often reused from 4G.”
Overall, T-Mobile’s 5G UC and Verizon’s 5G UWB have nearly the same average speeds, but T-Mobile wins by a wide margin in affordability, while Verizon offers better gaming, OTT voice, and video experiences with improved 5G . .
Extended 5G Comparison
In all US counties where Opensignal served carrier-based 5G, T-Mobile led by a wide margin, 41.9% of them, including 5G Ultra Capacity.
Meanwhile, Verizon 5G UWB was available in 11.7% of them, while AT&T 5G+ was only available in a tiny 1.7%.
In terms of speed, T-Mobile and Verizon were head to head in both average 5G download and upload performance:
However, Verizon took first place in gaming, voice, and video, but all three carriers were relatively close:
In closing, Opensignal says:
“It is clear from this analysis that the launch of C-band in January 2022 has changed the US 5G landscape and made user interactions with AT&T and Verizon more competitive with T-Mobile’s 5G and its 2.5GHz midband. The results here are also striking due to differences with the July 2022 Opensignal US 5G Experience report.”
