Octopath Traveler received good FZ reception when it was released for Switch in the summer of 2018 (later also for PC, Xbox One, Stadia), but perhaps above all it was the start of so-called “HD-2D”-game. Triangle Strategy and Live A Live has been released, Dragon Quest III-remake is in progress.

And now another one has been released, and this time it’s actually more Octopath Traveler.

Champions of the Continent is a mobile prequel to the original, which was released in Japan back in the fall of 2020. You play as a bunch of new jrpg heroes, but old faces will also appear. The game is free-to-play with, yup, microtransactions. Android Police’s Matthew Sholtz writes about one “greedy gacha game”, and his report definitely doesn’t sound optimistic. But is it really that simple…?

Gamespot has spoken to Hirohito Suzuki, global producer, who believes that much is free.

The title’s basic gameplay is free. We’ve adjusted it so that players can get through the first ending to the main story, which is about 60 hours of content, for free as well.

The characters that join a player’s roster will largely depend on luck, but it would make me happy if players can enjoy the process of figuring out how to best utilize the characters available to them.

If you really want to see it all, and take all the roads, it seems to require you to open your wallet. Suzuki wants you to “falling in love with the game”and then decide if you want to splurge for one “favorite character”.
