Along with the fourth beta versions of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 that were released to developers today, Apple has made available a beta ActivityKitwhich will allow developers to start building apps that can take advantage of the Live Activities feature introduced in iOS 16.

Announced at WWDC, Live Activities are interactive notifications that are constantly updated, allowing you to follow what’s happening in real time right from your lock screen. For example, if you’re following a sports game, you can see an updated score on your lock screen, or if you’re waiting for a taxi, you can watch the driver approach.

With the ActivityKit framework, you can launch a Live Activity to send updates to your app on the lock screen. For example, a sports app might allow the user to launch a Live Activity to stream a live sports match. Live Activity appears on the lock screen while playing and offers the latest updates about the game.

Developers can use ActivityKit to set up, start, update, and end a Live Activity. Live Activities are not widgets and end up using a different mechanism to receive updates.

Apple’s iOS 16 preview page lists Live Activities as a feature that won’t be available at the launch of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, but the company is allowing developers to take advantage of adding this functionality to their apps. Apple says Live Activities will come with the iOS 16 update later this year.

Developers will not be able to introduce Live Activities enabled apps until the feature is released in the future.
