Before Gamescom really gets going on August 24, 2022, Canadian Geoff Keighley has another say in the matter, or rather: presenting the new edition of the opening night.

Would you like a bit of lazy PR babble, some decently shameless appearances by developers or Hollywood greats and a few trailers that make it worth spending the evening on YouTube or Twitch? Help is coming!

Gamescom Opening Night on August 23rd

As moderator and creator of the opening night, Geoff Keighley beaming with joy, announces on Twitter, the new edition of his format starts exactly one evening before Gamescom officially begins. As is his inimitable way, he announces numerous trailers for new and well-known games, and a few world premieres should also find their way into the program.

Unlike in the last two years, the event will be streamed directly from the exhibition center in Cologne from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Twitch and YouTube. Up to 5000 fans should also be able to be there live. Since it is a rule for the opening night to only show material from so-called “Gamescom partners”, announcements or gameplay material from Electronic Arts, Sony and Nintendo games are excluded here.

dollar sign in the eyes

If game developers want to get a slot in the format created by Geoff Keighley, they have the following options: First of all, the developers are lucky, whose announcements or trailer material are selected by Keighley’s editors because of “special interest”.

There is also a wildcard for indie developers that allows them to present their content. However, only studios that can report annual sales of less than 100 million dollars are considered “indie”. If a developer or publisher who is not selected or is above this limit wants to buy a place on the show, it will be expensive:

Gameplay material shown for 30 seconds costs 85,000 euros, with a longer performance of around two minutes a whopping 210,000 euros are flushed into the Canadian coffers.
