It was about time

As of September 1, it will be prohibited to ride electric scooters on footpaths, Infrastructure Minister Tomas Eneroth (S) announced today.

The new decision means that anyone who drives an electric scooter on footpaths can be fined. The new rule will come into effect at the same time as it will be prohibited to park electric scooters on footpaths and cycle paths, the same rules that currently apply to traditional bicycles.

The purpose of the new rules is to improve accessibility and safety for everyone walking on the footpaths, states Eneroth who says:

“I have witnessed how many elderly and disabled people felt quite a lot of anxiety when electric scooters whizzed past at high speed, he continues. There must be order and order in the traffic. Now it’s game over.”
