Despite the war, the Ukrainian studio Frogwares continues to work and had teased a “Project Palianytsia” announced as a horror game. We now learn via a communication from the studio that it will be the remake of Sherlock Holmes: The Night of the Sacrifices which was released in 2006.
This “new” title will be called Sherlock Holmes The Awakened and is billed as a massive rewrite and remake of the 2006 game which was a crossover between the writings of Sir Conan Doyle and HP Lovecraft.
A time called into question after the Russian invasion, the teams from Frogware are now confident in their ability to complete the project. This will go through a Kickstarter coming soon. The game is scheduled to be released on PC, PS4, PS5XB1, Xbox Series X/S and nintendo-switch with the technology used for the recent opuses of the license.
We can embody a young Sherlock who will work on his first major case with his newly met companion, John Watson. What at first seems like a classic missing person case turns out to be a web of conspiracies from a cult worshiping the ancient god Cthulhu. The game will take place in 4 locations: Victorian London, a Swiss mental asylum, the bayous of New Orleans and the Highlands of Scotland. Holmes and Watson will try to disentangle reality from the supernatural while trying to stop the cultists.
Denys Chebotarov, producer at Frogwares, explains that continuing the scriptwriting arc of the young Sherlock with horrific events has been in the studio’s mind for a while. The supernatural side and cosmic horrors of Sherlock’s younger years are interesting in explaining how he becomes this haunted and broken genius. Events will also give our version of the deep connection between Holmes and Watson.
The game will be completely redone with the Unreal Engine 4 with only the intelligent reuse of certain elements of Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One. New mechanics of gameplay will be integrated and the originals will be reworked. The dubbing will be completely redone.
The rewrite will aim to become a direct continuation of the story of young Sherlock from Frogwares.
Great promises therefore, but coming from a studio whose latest Sherlock games are successful, we can believe it, especially since the Sherlock + Cthulhu mix can work very well even if it may shock purists.
