The MG4, also known by the code name MG Mulan is official. It could very quickly become the reference in terms of value for money among electric cars.
After its SUV and its electric station wagon, respectively the ZS EV and the “5”, MG is entering the compact market. It is with the MG4, just made official, that the British brand, which went under the Chinese flag, definitely wants to make an impression. Because if the property of SAIC Motors is doing well and its market share has been growing at high speed since its return in 2020, it still lacks a reference model. The MG4 has everything to become.
Known as MG Mulan, it marks a real turning point in the brand’s strategy. Indeed, the compact electric inaugurates a new platform for SAIC Motors, the aptly named MSP which has been specifically designed for electric. The previous MG models had been declined (outside of Europe), under other engines, including thermal. This time, MG is aiming for electric only and this modular platform should allow it to develop a good part of its future vehicles. In addition to its versatility, the MSP platform offers the possibility of integrating the new “One Pack” battery from SAIC Motors, a particularly thin accumulator (110 mm thick) which makes it possible to lower the height of the vehicle. This is only 1.50 m against 1.57 m, for example, for the ID.3, one of its main competitors. The other particularity of the “One Pack” battery is its flexibility. Indeed, it would be possible to opt for the small battery when purchasing and replace it with the larger one later, if necessary. Other advantages of the MSP platform: a significant gain in weight, better weight distribution and above all a gain in space and habitability. These elements are of course theoretical and will deserve attention during our future test.
Up to 450 km range
In terms of design, MG, which hadn’t really given much to dream about with the MG5, seems to have made some progress. The compact offers a rather sporty aesthetic with a rather original look. Inside, there should also be a lot of changes compared to what the MG ZS EV and the MG5 we tested offered. The brand has not yet communicated on the equipment on board, but the first images show the presence of two large screens and a new version of the home OS.
Fortunately, we know a little more about engines. As usual, the offer at MG will be relatively simple and readable in terms of options/finishes. At launch, the electric compact will be offered in two versions of 54 kWh and 64 kWh batteries. These will be associated with two levels of engines at 170 hp or 204 hp. In its most muscular version, the MG4 would make it possible to bring down the 0 to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds. As for autonomy, it would be increased to 450 km with the large battery.
A price lower than 30,000 euros?
On paper, the MG4 has enough to shake a good part of the board. Whether it’s the electric Mégane, the ID.3 or the Leaf, they will have to be wary of a contender with long teeth and tight prices. Because this is the strong argument of MG. The brand has already announced that the MG4 will be its least expensive vehicle, therefore lower than the 32,490 euros currently requested by the MG5. In other words, it could be a compact, sold at the same price as a city car such as the Peugeot e-208 or the Renault Zoé. MG has not yet unveiled its price list for its future nugget. The compact is currently finishing its road tests. Its pre-orders will probably open in September for marketing before the end of the year. Ultimately, in terms of its technical characteristics and its price, the MG4 is likely to be one of the most interesting vehicles of the year.
