The National Labor Relations Board approved union elections for Apple Store employees in Maryland. This certification comes 10 days after Towson became the first Apple retail store in the US to vote to unionize.

The Coalition of Organized Retail Workers (CORE) has voted to join the International Association of Aerospace and Machinists (IAM). However, now the group will be called IAM-CORE and will allow Apple managers to conclude the first contract.

IAM and the new members of IAM-CORE in Towson, Maryland are looking forward to making a deal with Apple and earning the first strong contract that will result in positive change for Apple employees and the customers they are proud of. Members of IAM-CORE believe that the opportunity to collectively bargain with Apple will improve their workplace and continue to solidify Apple’s reputation as one of the most innovative companies in the world. IAM-CORE continues to organize from coast to coast to communicate its voice to Apple employees.

It’s not just the Apple Store in Maryland.

These efforts are not specific to Maryland. Apple stores around the world are also trying to form a union. Retail stores in Kentucky, New York, Scotland and earlier in Atlanta began organizing their unionization efforts. In addition, we are expected to see more Apple stores, especially in the United States, which will also start organizing unions.

negotiations with Apple

IAM expects Apple to get a fair contract despite the tech giant’s anti-union efforts. Apple has previously been accused of busting unions, hiring the notorious anti-union lawyers Littler-Mendelssohn, and holding anti-union “audience rallies.” The company also tried to negotiate by offering employees higher wages and better work schedules.
