The Dark Brotherhood initiation ritual in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim introduces you to one seemingly unsolvable task. The assassin Astrid demands that you help on a guild assignment and hunt down one of the three prisoners in the room. However, it does not reveal who the real target is.

Reddit user DarkSteveYT solved the puzzle of the quest. All he needs for this is the Clairvoyance Illusion Spell. In most cases the spell is completely useless as it does nothing but draw a magic line to the next quest marker. In this case, however, the path leads directly to one of the three prisoners: the true target of the assassination contract.

You don’t have to join the Dark Brotherhood

The Khajiit Vasha looks pretty suspicious anyway. He himself admits that he would have taken it as a personal insult not to be killed by his enemies. Nevertheless, in the comments the Reliability of spell doubted.

Some users refer to this Skyrim Wiki, which says clairvoyance points to a random target. The broader The Elder Scrolls Wiki however, opposes it and reveals that Vasha is always chosen. Also DarkSteveYT writes that he tested the experiment on several characters and clairvoyance always pointed to Vasha.

The quest “Whoever has friends like this…” actually has several ways to solve it. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter to Astrid which destination you choose. Alternatively, you can attack the assassin herself. After her death, however, the Dark Brotherhood’s path is blocked. Instead, you can make it your mission to destroy the murderous guild.
