Testing revealed a new Twitter status feature, and the company said it’s available to some users in the US and Australia…

TechCrunch playfully suggests that while Facebook is trying to be TikTok, Twitter is trying to be Myspace.

Twitter is giving us back a part of Facebook (or LiveJournal, or Myspace). Some users have reported that they can now post statuses to Twitter, which allows them to tag posts like it’s a retro MySpace vibe. Some of these statuses include “Spoiler Alert”, “Thoughts in the Soul”, “Picture of the Day”, and for some reason the very redundant “Current Status”. Right now, users can’t customize their status – you just have to choose from an existing Twitter list.

“For a limited time, we’re testing a feature that allows you to add a predefined list of status topics to your tweets to give your followers more context,” Twitter told TechCrunch. “So, whether you’re about to leave a hot topic on Twitter, share your soul thoughts, or have a bad case with Mondays, your tweets can better convey what you’re up to.”

Twitter confirmed that this test is being run for a limited time with a select group in the US and Australia, but declined to comment on group size.

This feature works the same as Facebook’s “feel” feature: the selected status, along with its accompanying emoji, appears above the actual tweet.

Status posts also work the same way as hashtags. If you tap or click on a status, you will see other tweets that use the same status.

It appears that these related topics are not moderated. We may or may not have stumbled upon unexpected NSFW material on our work computer under the “Monday Case” status.

Twitter has been testing quite a few potential features lately. His lawyers are as busy as his product development teams as the company is suing Elon Musk for not completing a contract acquisition of the company.

TechCrunch isn’t convinced of the value of Twitter’s status feature – what do you think?
