A skilled Dragon Rider is a force of nature, able to overtake any foe, surprise foes with attacks from above, and dash across the Dragon Isles at impressive speeds. Becoming a dragon rider and learning the basics is easy, but mastering this new skill takes practice. As soon as you get to know dragon riding in all its complexity, you will see the dragon islands with different eyes.
The basics of kite riding
As you travel through the Dragon Isles, you will begin your Dragon Rider training. Dragon riding is only available with Dragon Isles dragons, customizable mounts with unique abilities. As you level up, you will earn four different Dragon Isles dragons. In the hands of a skilled rider, these imposing winged terrors are capable of masterful maneuvers.
Each dragon has unlockable appearance options that you can choose and customize to make your new riding dragon your own. Dragon Warden Manuscripts, collected from quest rewards, exploration, achievement completions, and various other sources, will give you new styles for your dragons. Head to the next podium of transformation in any zone of the Dragon Isles to make changes to your dragon’s appearance.

Kite riding full of vigour
When you summon a Dragon Isles Dragon, the first thing you’ll notice is that your primary action bar has been replaced by your Dragon Riding skills, offering a new resource: Vigor. You spend vigor when using dragon riding skills. It will automatically recharge over time when you are on the ground (riding the kite or on foot) or in the air when flying at high speed.
gain speed
Are you ready for departure? Then climb onto your kite and find a high spot. If you jump from there, your dragon will spread its wings and glide forward, slowly losing altitude. Pointing your dragon’s nose down will quickly gain speed. If it points up, it slows down and climbs higher.
Making good use of your time in the air depends solely on your ability to gain speed on your descent and maximize your altitude on your ascent without losing momentum. Vigor abilities like Ascension to the Sky help you gain altitude, while others like Forward Boost give you a quick burst of speed to keep you going. Remember that your dragon’s vigor charges as it accelerates. Use this to your advantage when building momentum.
Dragon Riding Progress
Dragon Riding has its own progression system, which is unlocked when you get your first Dragon Isles dragon. As you progress, you can unlock more abilities, increase your Dragon’s vigor, and more. Dragon Glyphs, symbols of power scattered in the skies above the Dragon Isles, can be collected to accumulate progress and gain access to bonuses. Some dragon glyphs will be fairly easy to collect, while others will require a bit of exploration and some clever use of your dragon riding skills. We hope you also enjoy the journey and the view while chasing down all the dragon glyphs.
race to the top
Once you’ve obtained your dragons and mastered their abilities, there’s another opportunity for skilled dragon riders to excel: in dragon races! Throughout the Dragon Islands there are various dragon riding circuits that require you to complete a set course within a time limit. As you pass certain checkpoints, your time credit will increase. After completing the course, your performance will be evaluated. Your personal best times are saved and whenever you repeat a course, your time is compared to your best performance. Challenge other dragon riders in the ultimate test of skill and speed. Only the fastest rider wins!
