Far from smartphones with ever larger screens, Asus proposes to play its difference on a smartphone which will have nothing to envy to others in performance while offering a much more compact style, while maintaining a certain thickness (9.1 mm).
For this, the new Asus Zenfone 9 embeds a display 5.9-inch AMOLED with FHD+ resolution and 120 Hz refresh. Maximum brightness reaches 800 nits (and 1100 nits peak) and the screen supports HDR10+. An angled punch houses the 12 megapixel photo sensor for selfies.
Its shortened dimensions do not prevent it from integrating a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC with up to 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. At the rear, the smartphone has only two sensors but the Sony IMX766 main module of 50 megapixels is held in a cradle (gimbal) ensuring its stabilization on 6 axes and therefore promising sharp shots and fluid videos.
Little but strong
The other 12 megapixel module allows for ultra wide angle. Apart from the practical side of the stabilizer and the safe bet of the Sony IMX766 module, Asus is therefore not outbidding the photo part, nor is it tempted by a very fast charge by only offering 30W for its battery of 4300mAh.
It should be noted, however, that the Zenfone 9 is IP68 certified protecting it against sprays and immersions and that it offers a double stereo speaker.
The other atypical point of the smartphone is on the edge with a power button which doubles as a touch area to facilitate interactions (scrolling, in particular) within the Zen UI interface placed on Android 12.
The Asus Zenfone 9 therefore remains a high-end smartphone but in a small size. Its price will depend on the memory configuration chosen, with availability from August:
- 8 / 128 GB: 799 €
- 8 / 256 GB: 849 €
- 12 / 256 GB: 899 €
