At first glance, “Overrogue” looks like one of the many very classic retro role-playing games that the Japanese publisher Kemco produces together with developer Exe Create Inc. almost on an assembly line. But behind the pixel look hides a roguelite with a card-based combat system.
In fact, the Japanese publisher Kemco, in collaboration with the developer studio Exe Create Inc., is best known for traditional retro role-playing games that appeal to dreamy role-playing game nostalgia with their pixel look and intricate mechanics.
But from time to time they seem to want to reinvent themselves there too and venture a step into new realms with “Overrogue”, which will be available from July 7th. Instead of a classic story JRPG, you get a roguelite with a card-based combat system.
Overrogue: Complex card game for resourceful treasure hunters
Of course, there is still a typical Kemco story as a framework: As an ambitious adventurer, you take part in a competition in the underworld in which the next overlord is chosen. Only those who successfully explore labyrinths and collect enough crystals can secure the coveted title.
In order for you to succeed, of course, you have to descend into the dungeons of “Overrogue” over and over again and slowly but surely build your unbeatable deck of cards. As befits a roguelite, your current run is of course over when you die, but there are some permanent upgrades to unlock.

To keep you from getting bored with repeated explorations, you can look forward to five different types of mazes that use different maps. There is more variety with more than 300 different types of cards and 150 different types of treasure.
Overrogue will be released on July 7th for PlayStation 4 and 5, and PC via Steam. If the week’s waiting time is too long, you can on Steam ever go on a labyrinth exploration in a demo. But don’t put too much time into the demo: Unfortunately, you can’t transfer your game progress to the full version!
