Although the data center market has begun to use PCIe hard drives in large numbers, the SSD capacity of the SATA interface still has an advantage. Micron today launched the world’s first 5400 series SSD hard drive using 176-layer TLC flash memory. The SATA 6Gbps interface has a maximum capacity of 8TB, and no MTTF. The failure time is as high as 3 million hours, and the durability is also 50% higher than that of the competition.

Micron’s 176-layer TLC flash memory has been in mass production for more than a year, and it was mainly used on consumer SSDs before. The 5400 series this time is for the data center market, and it is also the first SSD with 176-layer flash memory in the market, which is mainly used to replace HDD hard drives with 10,000RPM speed.

The 5400 series hard drives this time are actually divided into three series. Among them, the 5400 boot has only 240GB capacity, which is M.2 specification and is mainly used for boot disks. The other 5400 Pro and 5400 Max are SATA interfaces with a capacity of 240GB. to 8TB (actually 7.68TB).

In terms of performance, the speed of the SATA 6Gbps interface is nothing to see. The read speed of the 5400 series can reach 540MB/s, and the write speed is 520MB/s. Only the 240GB capacity will be as low as 290MB/s and 350MB/s.

There is also a certain gap in random performance, but the main difference is the DWPD life. The 5400 Max series can reach up to 5.0, that is, the entire disk can be written up to 5 times a day, and the lifespan is only 0.6DWPD.That is 0.6 full disk writes per day, but this is 7.68TB capacity.

Taken together, Micron said that the 5400 series SSDs are 50% more reliable than competing products, with 50% higher data life and a 5-year warranty, making them ideal for replacing HDDs in data centers.
