IT House June 30 news, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced Thursday that the company has begun mass production of 3-nanometer semiconductor chips at its Hwaseong plant in South Korea, becoming the world’s first company to mass-produce 3-nanometer chips. Unlike previous generations of chips that used FinFETs, Samsung uses the GAA (Gate All Around) transistor architecture, which greatly improves power efficiency.

Compared with traditional 5-nanometer chips, Samsung said in a statement thatThe newly developed first-generation 3nm process can reduce power consumption by 45%, improve performance by 23%, and reduce area by 16%.

Samsung did not disclose the identities of the 3nm company’s customers, and analysts said that Samsung itself and Shanghai Pansi Semiconductor, a Chinese chip designer for virtual currency miners, are expected to be among the initial customers.

As a comparison,TSMC and Intel plan to start mass production of 3nm chips in the second half of this year and the second half of next year, respectively.

IT House has learned that TSMC is the world’s most advanced foundry chip manufacturer, controlling 54% of the global chip contract production market, and companies such as Apple and Qualcomm that do not have their own semiconductor facilities are its customers.

Samsung, which ranks second with a 16.3 percent market share, last year announced a 171 trillion won (about 884.07 billion yuan) investment plan to overtake TSMC as the global leader by 2030, according to data provider TrendForce. Top Logic Chip Manufacturers.

“We will continue to actively innovate in competitive technology development,” said Siyoung Choi, head of Samsung’s foundry business.

Samsung co-CEO Kyung Kye-hyun said earlier this year that its foundry business will seek new customers in China as companies from automakers to home appliance makers rush to secure production capacity to address a persistent global shortage of chips problem, it is expected to have high market growth in China.

Although Samsung was the first to produce 3-nanometer chips,But TSMC is planning to achieve mass production of 2nm chips in 2025.

Samsung is the market leader in memory chips, but it has been overtaken by leader TSMC in the more diverse foundry business, making it difficult to compete, analysts said. Samsung’s efforts to compete with industry leaders have also been hampered by lower-than-expected production of older chips over the past year or so. The company said in March that its operations had shown a gradual improvement.
