“This is an automatic notification,” the email read, “you received this email because there were no records of you using your badge to enter Tesla’s offices on at least 16 days in the 30 days ended June 28. As a reminder, all employees are expected to return to the office and work full time. We realize that there are many reasons why you may not check in, including illness, vacation, or business travel. Another employee posted on Blind that the new policy could be a deterrent to employees. “It doesn’t feel right,” he wrote. “I can’t put into words why it bothers me, it feels like it’s a bit out of bounds. It’s control. It’s disrespectful.”

On May 31 this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk issued an ultimatum to employees to return to the office for at least 40 hours a week or quit. He said the move was part of an effort to promote equality between factory workers and executives. During the Covid-19 pandemic, workers are being asked to work in factories.
