Sweden will send additional weapons to Ukraine. These include demining equipment, anti-tank weapons and machine guns. It is the fifth aid package to Ukraine that the government decides on today, Thursday.

– This time it is about material support that has been specifically requested by Ukraine, says Minister of Defense Peter Hultqvist (S).

The value of the support package is SEK 500 million. In addition to anti-tank weapons, Sweden will send demining equipment and support weapons such as machine guns.

No later than June 2, it was decided on arms deliveries to Ukraine, then with, among other things, a naval target robot.

Material only

Sweden has previously provided financial support to the Ukrainian central bank’s fund for the Ukrainian defense and a total of SEK 110 million to the NATO Ukraine fund to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces. But this time it is a purely material package.

– It is important that the support for Ukraine from the democratic countries Europe is continuous and long-term, says Peter Hultqvist.

When these deliveries will take place, Peter Hultqvist does not want to go into but says that it is in everyone’s interest that it takes place as soon as possible.

Not affected by NATO membership

When asked whether Sweden’s continued military support for Ukraine will be affected by NATO membership, Peter Hultqvist answered no.

– Then there are already discussions today between different countries about how we can together provide increased support.

According to the Minister of Defense, the fact that Sweden is now donating munitions to Ukraine will not affect the Armed Forces’ capacity to defend Sweden.

– The Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defense are constantly working on the issue and making trade-offs about what we need for our own needs, says Peter Hultqvist.

Facts: Fifth support package

Today’s decision is about support in the form of equipment such as anti-tank weapons, support weapons and demining equipment. In total, the support amounts to a value of approximately SEK 500 million.

Earlier this spring, Sweden gave Ukraine a naval target robot 17, 15,000 armored shots, 5,000 helmets, 5,000 safety vests, demining equipment, automatic rifles 90 with ammunition, 135,000 daily portions of food, and surplus equipment from the Armed Forces.

Sweden has previously also provided financial support in two rounds, SEK 500 and SEK 577 million, respectively, to the Ukrainian central bank’s fund for the Ukrainian defense and a total of SEK 110 million to NATO’s Ukrainian fund to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) has received SEK 100 million to be able to provide support to Ukraine through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and the UN.
