What’s going on in the film area with Tomb Raider? Now at least it seems certain: Alicia Vikander will probably not play the role of Lara Croft again.

The further future of Tomb Raider in the film area is once again in the stars. Reason: The corresponding rights are no longer in the hands of MGM, who last held the license. After the 2018 released feature film starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, the license rights have now been lost.

As The Wrap reported, the rest of Hollywood now has the opportunity to buy the license for new Tomb Raider films in a bidding war. Whether and where the brand will ultimately end up is initially open – and with it the cinematic future of the franchise.

MGM cast Alicia Vikander in the role of Lara Croft in 2018 and hit the mark with the flick. Both the reviews and the feedback from the fans were largely positive. That’s why the studio was still flirting with plans for a sequel in early 2021, which ultimately never materialized. That’s bitter, because that’s exactly what should have happened by a deadline in May. MGM would have had to give the green light for a new film by then in order to keep the license rights.

Why didn’t that happen? Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in March may have played a role; the new owners may initially put all their plans to the test again.

Before the MGM adaptation starring Alicia Vikander, there were already two films starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. These were released in 2001 and 2003 and were quite successful commercially, although the reviews, especially for the sequel, were mixed.
