In a surprising and shocking case, a Hyundai subsidiary in the United States was found to be working children in a factory. Indeed, the factory recruited workers from the age of 12.
It may seem impossible, but it turned out that a Hyundai subsidiary did use child labor. Even more surprisingly, this scandal happened in Montgomery, Alabama, in the United States. The pot of roses was discovered thanks to an investigation-report conducted by the Reuters news agency, in collaboration with the police and local authorities. According the Reuters reportthe factory belonging to the company SMART – which supplies parts for the assembly line of the Korean car manufacturer – had recruited migrant children to carry out certain tasks.
The youngest workers recruited by the factory were only 12 years old. While senior company officials claimed they were unaware there were children working in the factory, the investigation revealed that employees had known for years that this was the case. However, this scandalous practice was only investigated after the disappearance of a child of Guatemalan origin. The investigation that followed the disappearance revealed that the 14-year-old girl and her brothers, aged 12 and 15, had worked for years at this Hyundai subsidiary. None of them attended school during this period.
For the moment, we do not know the exact scope of this aberrant case of child labor at the Hyundai subsidiary. While SMART denies the facts of the case, Hyundai has yet to confirm or deny anything. The company has just stated that it does not tolerate this kind of unethical practice at any of its affiliated entities.
