Volkswagen supports the EU’s 2035 ban on the sale of fuel vehicles BMW has yet to make a statement: experts say the task is difficult
Recently, a meeting in Strasbourg, France, voted to approve a European Commission proposal to stop the sale of new fuel vehicles in the EU from 2035, including hybrid vehicles. The ban will accelerate the transition to electric vehicles in the region.
Volkswagen and Mercedes have come out in support of the new regulation, which Volkswagen has issued in a series of statements, calling it “ambitious, but achievable” and noting that the regulation is an “ecological, technological and economical replacement for combustion engines as soon as possible. the only reasonable way,” and even praised the EU for helping “plan security for the future.”
Mercedes also praised the legislation. In a statement to the German Press Agency, Eckart von Klaeden, the group’s head of external relations, noted that Mercedes is ready to sell 100 percent of its electric vehicles by 2030, “a decision that will ensure the necessary infrastructure. The onus is on policymakers to put that in place.”
In addition to Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Stellantis, Jaguar, Land Rover and other car companies also support the regulation. But BMW has yet to commit to the regulation, and a BMW official said it was too early to set an end date for the ban on gasoline-powered cars.
It is important to note that the new law must be signed by all 27 EU countries before it can be finalized and ratified, which can be a very difficult task in the current state of large economies such as Germany, France and Italy.
However, given the current enforcement power of the EU and the routine operations of “wrangling” back and forth, it is obviously not an easy task to make this bill progress normally.
