The Chinese audio magazine 52audio has received new information about Apple’s Airpods 2 – and published images that provide information about the new features. In addition, a Twitter user posted a photo that should prove the discovery of a new Bluetooth codec (LC3) in future Airpods firmware.
The second generation of Apple’s Airpods is rumored to be available in the fall of 2022. However, the Chinese audio publication 52audio already has new information about the Airpods Pro 2 and posted some revealing pictures. From the outside, hardly anything has changed with the noise-cancelling true wireless earphones. However, an extensive look at the new Airpods charging case gives indications of possible new features.
Airpods Pro 2: With LC3 and microphone?
As reported by 52audio, the AirPods Pro 2 charging case should be equipped with a USB-C socket. This would mean that Apple would follow the recently agreed EU requirement that Airpods must have USB-C sockets by 2024. According to other leaker opinions, the successor product will still use the Lightning standard. There could be a speaker behind the two holes on the bottom of the charging case, which might play signals to help you find the Airpods more easily. The single hole on the bottom may hide a microphone, which could be used to pick up ambient noise to improve listening quality. Last but not least, the recess on the right side of the case catches the eye, where there is a place for carrying straps or accessories.

Meanwhile, a Twitter user claims to have demonstrated the new LC3 codec (Complexity Communication Codec) using his AirPods Max in future firmware. In which relevant tweet a corresponding photo was included. LC3 will be introduced together with the Bluetooth 5.2 LE standard and should offer improved handling of packet losses in addition to higher audio quality. In this respect, new hardware will be required that supports Bluetooth 5.2 LE – probably also a successor to the H1 chip.
